People who are struggling with weight loss try all kinds of workouts and diets in order to burn calories. Yet, you will hear most of them say that they feel that they are not losing weight as fast as they should be. The truth is, even if you are putting in genuine hard work into losing weight, you may be making certain mistakes that end up negating all your efforts! Here are a few tips on how to burn more calories:

Women worry a lot about their fitness today. Yet, they often underestimate the effectiveness of weight training in losing weight. Weight training builds lean muscles in your body and these are capable of burning more calories and faster too! If you have healthy muscles, you will burn calories up to 3 times faster than someone who doesn’t.

Fitness diets often tend to ignore the ‘health’ part of the regime. Several diets require you to almost starve yourself. The truth is, even if you lose weight by not eating enough, you will pile on the lost weight and more once you stop the diet. Not to mention the fact that starving yourself can have serious side-effects on your overall health. Also, if you skip meals, you may end up over eating whenever you do give in to temptation and this leads to further weight gain.

Try to meet the RDA of vitamins of the B group, vitamin C, iron as well as calcium. These nutrients help the body burn calories faster. So if you are having a deficiency of any of these nutrients, you will face problems with losing weight.

Weight loss has become the prime health focus for millions of people around the globe as incidents of obesity and related health complications are on the rise. People lead sedentary lifestyles and often end up eating a lot of junk food. This adds to their weight gain. Everyone knows just how important it is to balance your calorie intake and the amount of physical work out you get in a day. However, you need to know just how hard you need to work in order to begin losing weight.

An average person requires about 2000 calories in a day to stay healthy. However, this count is made considering that a person is getting ample physical workout during the day. Your physical work out includes everything you do from climbing the stairs, to walking to the corner shop and even the sports you indulge in. However, people generally don’t have enough time to develop a regular work out regime and having desk jobs prevents them from moving around much.

There are certain things that you can keep in mind if you want to boost the number of calories you burn in a day. Here are some quick tips:

Choose to eat healthier foods like non-fried fruits and vegetables whenever you can.

Give up a few coffee breaks and use the time climbing the stairs at work.

Get enough of sleep as your cells need to be healthy in order to burn more energy.

Drink loads of water to flush out burnt fat and toxins from your body.

Try to complete at least one vigorous household chore over the weekend!

Many of us struggle to achieve several goals in life, and usually this struggle continues over several years. In the end, we might find that the results were below our expectations, and in certain cases we might even end up as complete failures. We then wonder why it had to end up like this or that, and why we did not succeed, or why the others got ahead while we lagged behind, and so on. These thoughts could bother us for long durations, even over several years if the goal was critical for the future course of our lives. Many of us do not realize that we have ignored a small critical aspect during the whole process – the need for training.

Training is an important aspect which is critical to the success of any effort. This is particularly true in today’s competitive environment, where all fields of human activity are already full of large numbers of aspirants who are struggling to get ahead in these respective areas. It is these crowds in all fields that make the need for training really critical and necessary. It is needless to mention here, that the training must be proper and under top-notch professionals, and not just any effort disguised as training. To put this in other words, the success or failure of any effort largely depends on the quality, caliber and capabilities of the trainer.

Training is a highly professional activity, and most countries have a system of certifying trainers in many activities over a wide spectrum, which could include sports, and physical fitness at one end to teaching, and academics at the other end. It can really help.

The human body needs food, water and air to survive. The food that we eat provides the necessary nutrients to the body, water replenishes the lost water in the body, and air provides the necessary oxygen for the body to live. The heart pumps blood to all parts of the body, and all other organs of the body have specific roles to play and depend on this blood to function properly.

When a healthy child is born, all body functions are normal. As a child grows up, changes happen in the body. Some changes are positive, while other changes are not so positive, and some changes may even be harmful. The negative or harmful changes in the body happen due to what the person eats, drinks, or breathes. These changes affect all functions of the body, and the performance of the body can get reduced, very much like an automobile which is not properly maintained. This is where exercise plays an important role for the well-being of the body. Just as an automobile needs to be properly tuned, regularly serviced, with use of proper fuel, charged battery, etc, similarly the human body also needs proper care for it to function in a healthy and trouble-free manner.

It becomes necessary that all inputs to the body must not be contaminated and of the desired quality. The food must be free of toxic chemicals like pesticides, water must be clear and potable without contamination, and the air must be pure and clean. In addition to the contamination, the person’s lifestyle further creates adverse effects on the body. This is where exercise plays a critical role for the wellbeing of the body. Proper exercise, on a regular basis must form a regular habit to neutralize all the harmful effects on the body, and to maintain a healthy balance of the body, mind and spirit.

Is there anyone who considers themselves to be in perfect shape? Even bodybuilders with perfect physiques never seem to stop working on making improvements. We’re constantly bombarded with messages to eat right and exercise more (two very simple concepts that seem to fly over many people’s heads). With the New Year comes the resolution to get in better shape. This means joining a gym with the best intentions. Within three months those good intentions have gone right out the window. What’s the answer? Perhaps it is as simple as getting the right motivation.

Much of our political discourse is focused on how to fix our crumbling healthcare system. Even with sweeping legislation to provide coverage for all, we still need to get ourselves in shape. Preventative measures can go a long way towards reducing health care costs. Look no further than the rise in adult diabetes. Not only does the treatment of this disease put a strain on our healthcare system, but it is actually preventable with proper diet and exercise. What we need are fresh approaches to physical fitness and nutrition. Those approaches could be found with a new class of graduates who have dedicated themselves to whipping the rest of us into shape.

One way these new trainers and nutritionists can get educated is through earning online degrees specializing in those areas of fitness and healthy eating. It’s not enough to work out and read the labels on food boxes (although that’s important). To provide the proper motivation for healthier living, the trainers of tomorrow need to understand how food affects our bodies. The same can be said for the dieticians. If we’re supposed to eat better, somebody should come up with a tastier way of having Brussels sprouts! First learn, then motivate. That’s a plan we can all get behind.

Cruises are often viewed by people as a chance to get away from it all. People are able to get away from work, family and daily chores. While everyone is busy getting away from it all they tend to relax in the sun and have fun but they forget about one important thing, exercising. Many people become lax in their exercise routine while they are away on vacation. They use the excuses of the lack of exercise facilities and relaxation as reasons for not exercising but those days are long gone.

Cruise lines have started to cater to the needs of their passengers, and are referred to as fitness cruises. Many cruises have started to create a professionally stocked fitness centers where passengers are able to go. These workout rooms have state-of-the-art equipment, great fitness classes and wonderful views of the open seas, so there is no reason cruise passengers cannot get in their daily dosage of exercise. In fact, cruise workout rooms have even inspired those that don’t normally work out to consider taking up some fitness classes just for the beautiful views.

The exercise options don’t just end with the workout room on the cruise. Cruises tend to cater to those that are seeking fun and fitness. This means that they will provide many ways that you can work out when the ship docks. Some cruises have been known to offer swimming off the beautiful sandy beaches, ziplining, paragliding or even hiking along the native trails where you can see local plants and animals. The possibilities are endless and it’s a great way to get your exercise in and see the local culture.

Cruises no longer have to be unhealthy excursions. In fact, with the addition of state-of-the-art workout facilities and the hundreds of exciting exercise options available when the ship docks, one could almost think that all cruises were starting to turn into fitness cruises!

During the throes of winter, it can be a challenge to find a way to exercise that doesn’t entail going out into the nasty weather. Whether you live in one of the many Chicago apartments or your home is in Nebraska, winter weather can put the kibosh on your exercise regimen. There are many indoor exercise alternatives to running, swimming, and walking. These indoor exercises can provide just as much burn. To keep trim this winter, consider some of the following moves.

Push-ups give different muscles a good work out. At home, you can perform standard push-ups on the floor to work your chest and shoulders. Inclined push-ups will work your chest; get your back into it by lifting a leg every time you descend. Other classics such as crunches and sit-ups have benefits, but should not be the only abdominal exercises you do. Crunches and sit-ups only work the upper abdomen; you need to work the whole area. Leg lifts, bicycle (while on your back), and scissor kicks will work your lower abs and obliques as well.

For aerobic workouts consider squats, jumping rope, and jumping jacks. Squats can be easily done indoors and will provide your abs, legs, arms, and shoulders with the exercise they need to stay lean and firm through winter’s chilly months. Jumping rope will work out your legs, of course, but this exercise provides benefits to your arms, shoulders, and heart. Jumping jacks are another exercise that’s easily done in the warmth of your home. This aerobic exercise gets your heart pumping and melts off calories and pounds from all those holiday dinners. There are many other exercises you can add to your weekly or daily regimen such as Pilates, yoga, or even dance. Whatever you choose to do this winter, do it consistently to keep yourself in top shape.

At the first level of your training, you are going to need to practice with a level of intensity that borders on an obsession. For most young and inexperienced martial artists, this is the only stage they will ever experience, simply for the fact that most people do not have the level of discipline that it takes, in order to really go anywhere with their art form. But of course, the most exceptional martial artists do not stop there. We will cover the other two levels in future articles, but for now you need to know that practice will slowly drive you onward toward perfection. Granted, perfection is never attainable, but you would be amazed at how great you can get when you practice as if it were.

Your first step is to learn the movements which you will be practicing. Learn them very well, and check yourself frequently, both in a mirror and against the skill level of other people whose skills are more practiced than yourself. A good student will ask a better student for advice on their form for everything. A truly great student, on the other hand, will seek out students (and instructors) who have a very high skill level in each individual movement, and ask them for their assistance with each part on its own. In time, this level of attention to detail builds tremendous skill in many different areas.

As your skills progress, you will begin to see how some movements could be improved. Out of respect to your instructors, you would do well to only practice “your way” outside of their sight and away from their school. If nothing else, you might find that your “improvements” are either movements which they will teach you later on, or are simply better suited to your body in a real world context. Many martial arts schools focus more on preserving the art form than they do on the practical combat applications.

When you are young, you are at your peak strength (unless you engage in a strength building crusade later in life, or you do not work to condition yourself at all in your youth). And because you are at your strongest and most resilient against injuries, you may practice a hard style of martial arts. The hard styles are distinct in that they generally focus on the development of physical strength and toughness. When people work to harden their knuckles and joints in the practice of kung fu, they are working on developing a hard style. Rarely do hard stylists concern themselves much with grace or parrying, because their desire is to out muscle the other guy. Generally, a contest between hard stylists is a force on force match up.

Think about what would happen if they had bulldozer fights. This is the sort of mindset you need to take, when considering the mindset of the hard stylist. While they do employ technique, their focus is generally on out hammering their opponent, as opposed to simply outwitting and evading him. The good part about hard styles is that they are very good at conditioning your muscles, so your ability to perform manual labor will improve as a consequence of your efforts to practice them. And of course, there is a certain intimidation factor which goes along with working to brutalize your opponents.

Of course, there are some down sides to the practice of a hard style, as well. The punishing blows which a hard stylist rains upon his opponent will do ample damage to the unfortunate person who receives them, but the damage will also occur within the attacker’s own body. In order to withstand this kind of abuse, hard stylists are generally younger men, who can shrug off the damage to bones, muscles and joints that comes out of (and is intrinsic to) this kind of training. Simply put, older people aren’t hard stylists.

The holidays are a time for eating, drinking, gift giving, visiting family and eating and drinking. Yes I mentioned eating and drinking twice because we do a lot of it during the holidays. And with that, you will probably put on a few extra pounds. So with that in mind, you might want to go ahead and start planning an exercise regime. In fact, you might be able to get a few gifts to help you with your new program. One year I decided to do just that. I decided I would train for a triathlon and knew I would need a lot of new apparel and equipment to get me through my training regime and my races. It turned out to be a great plan. For the holidays that year, people gave me gifts and gift certificates to help me out with my plan. In fact, I even went online to research triathlon bikes and ended up buying myself one for Christmas.

If you are unfamiliar with this type of race, I’ll fill you in a bit. The first thing to know is that the one event is actually three races. There is a swimming segment, a running segment, and of course a biking segment. The races themselves also can consist of different lengths. You can participate in the shortest first to get your feet wet and see how you like it. The shortest is the Sprint. Then the next longest is the Olympic, then the Half Ironman and finally the Ironman. Even if you put in a lot of training, the full Ironman might be a bit much as it is a 2.4 mile swim, a 112 mile bike race, and a 26.2 mile run. Either way, just the training itself is great exercise and it will help you drop all the extra pounds you put on over the holidays.

American Kenpo (aka Kenpo Karate) has been around since the late 1940s. It is a martial arts technique that employs quick, moves delivered very rapidly. It consists of more than 700 separate and distinct self-defense techniques, blocks and 72 kicks. The intention is to overwhelm the opponent.
Edmund K. Parker

William Chow taught Edmund Parker the art of Kenpo. Edmund Parker made refinements to the methods, theories and concepts of Kenpo and is now considered the creator of American Kenpo.

He passed away in 1990 and left no successor.

American Kenpo, as Parker developed it, became a blend and crossover of other martial arts philosophies:

• Chinese Arts such as Hung Gar and Choy Li Fut influenced what became American Kenpo.
• In a book published in 1960, Parker’s Kenpo incorporated the use of smooth linear and circular movements heavily influenced by the Japanese practice of martial arts.
• In American Kenpo, Parker began eliminating all Asian language elements and some of the Asian traditions. Instead, he used American English. His techniques transitioned from Chinese and Japanese to his own favored forms and methods.

Famous American Kenpo Practitioners

In addition to Elvis Presley, probably Ed Parker’s most famous student, Edmund Parker trained such well known personalities as Robert Wagner, George Hamilton, Warren Beatty, Robert Culp and Blake Edwards.

Parker also wrote several books including “The Zen of Kenpo” and the “Encyclopedia of Kenpo”. He acted as a martial arts advisor on many movies and television programs and published a rule booklet for karate competitions.

Today, there are Ed Parker schools and affiliates all throughout the United States and internationally in Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Chile, Africa and may other countries.

The Belt System

Diferent martial arts use different designations. The American Kenpo uses a belt system consisting of:

•	White, Yellow, Orange, Purple, Blue, Green
•	First, Second and Third Brown
•	First through Tenth Black

Although getting in shape is not easy, deciding what fitness classes to take isn’t quite a no-brainer. Different types of gyms have different types of classes which fit different people, differently. The best fit for you depends on your fitness goals, including whether you want to lose weight, get in shape, stay in shape, train for a sport or event, increase flexibility, gain muscle or create a mental-physical connection. The right class also depends on your personality; do you need to be pushed and barked orders or are you more relaxed? Do you enjoy making a fool of yourself or do you like repetitive, simple workouts? Would you prefer being outside or inside? What’s your idea of fun fitness? Do you like sweating it out or breathing deeply? Are you competitive or docile? Do you like working with machines, freestanding equipment or using the weight of your own body?

If you want to lose weight, cardio classes may be best for you. These classes could include cardio dance, such as Zumba, aerobics, spin or kickboxing. For improved mind-body connection and flexibility, you may want to choose a yoga, Pilates, or Yogilates class. Some yoga and Pilates classes, however, are also cardiovascular. For building muscle or targeting specific areas, a weightlifting training session might be for you. To train for a specific event or sport, it may benefit you to take a class specific to it. If you love being in the water but hate swimming laps, an aqua aerobics class may be for you.

Cost, gym atmosphere, times and personality all factor into what the best class for you is. Do research and you’ll be able to make an informed decision. Don’t be afraid to try new and unusual offerings either; from knitting on the stability ball to Zing, a cardio class that involves singing, the possibilities are infinite.

Having a strategy in life is something that every child should know about (and also be working on) before they leave primary school. The more prepared your plan is, the better you are likely to do with anything in life. However, in the context of the martial arts, strategy is a little bit less long term, and more about using the fluidity of your movements to gain the advantage in a fight. After all, once the movements are easy enough to do without thinking about them, the real possibilities open up to you. Consider the nature of combat itself- it is unpredictable, fast paced, and can often be very dangerous to those who are willing to take a few hits.

When you still have to think about how to do the movements, you are not at level two- you need to stay at the first level of your training, until you have mastered the movements themselves. In time, you will become a lot better. But you might be wondering about what level two means, if not the mastery of the moves themselves. Remember our brief coverage of strategy, and then consider how that applies to the martial arts in general, and then to a fight itself in particular. In a fight, you want to have as much of a plan to win as you can.

After all, winning is about more than just having the right methods of attack. Rather like a woodworker who has the very best tools, even the best punches and kicks will not win you any fights unless you know not only how to use them, but also when they can best be employed. For the people who win fights as a general rule, being able to plan out (and recognize at a moment’s notice) when a particular type of attack will work versus when it will not is a vital skill. Any other kind of win is generally just luck.

When a lot of fresh faced youngsters first step in to a martial arts school, they are generally there for only a couple of different reasons. For some of them, their parents think that they need discipline. For most of the kids who first walk in, however, they are out to learn how to fight well. Maybe they want to be able to push people around (those kids rarely last very long in a formal setting), and maybe they just want to be able to push back when someone else comes up trying to bully them. But whatever the student’s initial reason for coming to the school, learning how to fight is the general result. After all, the movements that most martial arts teach involve punching, kicking, grappling and generally causing physical offense to another person.

Early on in your training, you learn a lot of different ways to do damage to another human being. And this is where most people generally stop learning all that much about the martial arts. For most people, there is no other element besides “how can I most effectively beat up somebody else?” Of course, more serious students learn other things besides that, such as self discipline and generally good health practices. But of course, most people learn little more than a few drills designed to attack people before they finally give up and figure that they have learned enough.

However, those who stick with their training will often find that the benefits of learning how to fight can move far beyond simply being able to defend ones self from external threats. For instance, there are great health benefits which may be gained from the practice of vigorous physical exercise, and the martial artists who train diligently often become both very strong and very healthy as a result of this training. Of course, as you progress onward and get somewhat older, the desire to fight will begin to fade.

Cross training and running shoes are two completely different types of sports equipment with different uses. Not only are they stylish with jeans such as those made by True Religion, but their true purpose is to help with exercise and training. Therefore, it is imperative to know which shoes should be used for which activity. If exercise is the only use for your shoes, cross trainers are the way to go. If sneakers are needed for running/jogging, running shoes are the best choice.

Running Shoes
Running shoes are meant solely for running so their design is much different than cross-trainers. When running, humans put pressure on the heels then transfer it to the toes. Therefore, the heels must provide the most support to avoid injury. Running shoes are designed to force forward motion and provide thicker heels. The extra cushioning absorbs the shock to prevent injury. Furthermore, running shoes have a slightly lifted toe area to propel forward motion.

Cross Training Shoes
Cross trainers provide support equally across the whole foot. These shoes are meant to be an all-around, multi-tasking support system. They deliver a firm grip to all areas of the foot as well as help with stability. Cross training shoes are commonly found in both strength and aerobic training. The soles offer support to the heels and legs and greatly assist with multiple physical activities.

Running vs. Cross Training Shoes
The most noticeable difference between the two is running shoes are meant for running and cross-training shoes are designed for cross training exercises. Also, running shoes tend to be firmer and more flexible around the toes while cross trainers are extremely firm with less flexibility.

When shopping for either variant of shoe it can initially be difficult to find one that suites your needs because of the many choices available. It is advantageous to conduct research prior to purchase.

Most people have completely drunk the Kool-Aid on the notion that you have to have some big, fancy gym in order to get yourself into better shape. While it certainly helps to be in a place full of pumped up pretty people, and to have all kinds of neat equipment at your disposal, these things can actually hinder you a little bit. After all, in a place where they consider every muscle group special enough to warrant a flock of its own machines (like anybody needs to do five different kinds of curls), it can be a little hard to imagine that your body is anything but a loose, unrelated collection of traps, gluts, abs, delts, and a bunch of other abbreviations.

However, you are a working, functional unit where every part serves a valuable purpose. In addition, this exercise, while bizarre, is a great way to build your strength and endurance. It’s called Car Catch, and it involves a place where a car has some room (at least 30 yards or so), a car in neutral, you and someone to control the car. It’s important to have someone inside the car for safety purposes. Do not be macho about this, or you could end up seriously hurt.

You start out behind the car, pushing it forward. Once you have gotten it up to some speed, you jog around to the front of the car and stop it. Then you begin to push in the opposite direction, repeating the process repeatedly until you run out of endurance. You would be well advised to start out with a smaller car and then graduate to something a bit bigger, like a lot of the new Chevrolet models. Those are some gorgeous American machines. They also have the added benefit that you can push them around, without looking like you’re pushing because the car is broken.

Children get the most joy out of any sporting activity. Add in the ability to play with friends their own age, run around like crazy and just have a chance to be themselves and you’ve got a mixture for one extremely happy child. Just take a look at the various sporting leagues, camps and events that are held for children and it’s obvious just how appealing sports are to children.

It is averaged that a child by the time they reach the age of 10 will have tried over 10 different sporting events in their life. That is a lot of different sports to try but it’s clear that the reason that they are trying these various sporting events is because they truly love and enjoy what they are doing.

Of course children love to play sports because it gives them a chance to run around and be wild but they also love to play sports because it’s a chance to be a kid. There is very little pressure on a child at that age to have to compete at a high level of athleticism. It’s not as if sports betting sites are lining up to take bets on the winner of the “Boy Under 10 Soccer Match”, but it just doesn’t happen. This free style atmosphere makes playing in sports a lot of fun for children.

Sports is also an outlet for releasing frustration, anger, depression and loneliness. So while a child may appear as if they are just playing in sports and enjoying it, they could really be enjoying it because it is a form of therapy for them. This is a lot better then turning these emotions inward which could cause even further harm to the child. As a parent if you keep the stress off a child and allow them to just enjoy playing their chosen sport, you’re sure to have a very happy child.

Unless you are a golfer or dart-thrower, if you play sports, you are prone to injury. Of course, some sports will leave you more prone than others, but there are some universal measures you can take to help prevent injury in any line of sports – even Cornhole.

The first thing you need to do is familiarize yourself with the physical demands and expectations of the sport you are playing. Research the types of injuries that are common to the sport and look at the measures some of the more trained and skilled athletes take in order to prevent injury. In cycling, for example, the most common types of injuries have to do with different leg and muscle fatigues, like IT Band Syndrome. It’s a common condition among cyclists, and can be alleviated by changing the saddle height or cleat position. Unless you have done your research, however, this won’t be so apparent.

Secondly, you need to stretch. Focus especially on those muscle groups which are expending the greatest amount of effort or receiving the greatest amount of stress. Pitchers and quarterbacks, for example, should stretch their shoulder and arm muscles to stay loose and limber and avoid muscle cramps. Runners should stretch their hamstrings and him flexors for the same reason.

If your sport calls for protective gear, like in Lacrosse, Football, Hockey, or Baseball, wear that protective gear. You may be out just messing around, but if the competition gets serious, then serious injuries will result if you’re not adequately protected. Sports like these involve a lot of physical contact and in addition to protective gear; you need a good wall of muscle behind the pads to help reduce the impacts on your body.

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, you should never underestimate the preventative and recuperative power of rest. Overtraining and overexertion can lead to injury just as much as inactivity. Rest is just as important for sports training as exercise and practice, and it will help prevent physical and psychological injury.

Depending on the intensity of your sport or physical exercise, you are subjecting your body to varying levels of intensity; some sports injuries are just facts of the practice. Not everybody will suffer a sports-related injury in their exercise or sports career, but these injuries are common enough that, if you do suddenly feel a pain or a pull, the options for treatment and prevention are readily accessible.

When it comes time for your sports practice or workout, the most important thing is to pay attention to your warm-up and cool-down stages. During these stages you get an opportunity to get the blood flowing, loosen up the muscles, and prepare your body for exertion. It’s easier to accelerate and decelerate slowly, rather than hopping off the couch into a sprint and setting back down on the couch again when you’re done. Stretch, drink water, build strength, and learn a good routine. This is the best form of prevention.

However, some injuries can’t be avoided so easily. In running or jogging, for example, your ankles, knees, hips, and even back have to endure hours of abuse. Over time, the running can take its toll, especially on the knees. There is a condition called ‘Runners Knee’ in fact, which involves a breakdown of cartilage behind the kneecap, which can turn arthritic or immobile if unaddressed. The best way to avoid Runner’s Knee is to work-out and strengthen your quadriceps and doing some strength-training on your upper legs.

Another common injury in sports is Tennis Elbow. Like Runner’s Knee, the injury derives from conditions caused by the sport itself, which is good news and bad news. Good because other people have dealt with it, and bad because sometimes recovery means putting your practice on hold. Tennis Elbow is a type of tendonitis, and golfers, baseball players, and of course, tennis players suffer from it. Treatment usually involves changing your technique and taking the stress off the affected tendons.

While sports injuries are common, they’re not always avoidable. Pay attention to what your body is telling you. Exercise should never be painful.

Taekwondo is one of the most popular martial arts, and one of the best for children to learn. The art itself relies on kicks and punches, but the sport offers so much more to children, especially in their early development. The physical advantages are self-evident. Taekwondo provides physical fitness to children through stretching, sparring, and repetitive practice. Most exercises are not combat-intensive, but rely on mastering kicks and punches while developing correct form and gaining strength. The physical achievements become almost secondary to what taekwondo does for participants both mentally and psychologically.

The art focuses on specific ideals and tenets when teaching its students. Taekwondo teaches discipline and self-restraint. Students learn to defend themselves; not to fight other children. Taking ownership of one’s self and of one’s actions is a large focus of any martial art, but especially taekwondo. Taekwondo instills self-control, self-confidence, and self-respect in its students.

The world is always changing, and new dangers present themselves every day. Children have access to more information than ever before. Children deal with increasingly mature concepts and content thanks to the internet and television. Learning a martial art like taekwondo can give them the mental and physical abilities to handle the world more positively and responsibly. By having stronger self-esteem and self-worth, children are better prepared to handle pressure. Taekwondo teaches respect, integrity, and perseverance.

Sometimes parents may overlook martial arts as a positive sport for their children. This could stem from misconceptions over the violent nature of martial arts, or a fear of their child’s safety. With a little research, however, parents can find the advantages of martial arts over traditional sports. As children grow, potential politics or genetic differences start separating children from larger team sports. Children can continue taekwondo regardless of external factors, as the only person the children compete with are themselves. The self-confidence and self-discipline taekwondo teaches lasts far beyond the end of a child’s martial arts activities. The values stay with children throughout the rest of their life.

There is no question that children have become victims to the new digital age. Constantly inundated with video games, TV, iPods, and more, children are spending more and more time participating in sedentary activities instead of going outside and getting fresh air. This trend along with the fast food world has instituted an epidemic of obesity among America’s youth. Even the White House has joined the effort by launching the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports, and Nutrition termed- Let’s Move!

The Importance of Children’s Participation in Sports

Different children will have different interests and therefore will take to and enjoy a wide array of sports. There are kid sports leagues for soccer, football, softball, basketball and more. If your child prefers a more solitary non-team setting sport you can sign them up for classes in tennis, swimming, or golf. Other options albeit not conducted outside but still extremely beneficial are various forms of marital arts including karate, kendo, and taekwondo. Whatever sport your child chooses, make sure its one that they are interested in to ensure their continued commitment and interest.

Benefits of Sport Participation

Children that are given a chance to participate in sports reap numerous benefits such as socialization with other children, opportunities for leadership, learning how to be a part of a team, and pure raw enjoyment. Additionally sport participation as been shown to increase childrens self-esteem and confidence, decrease school dropout rates, contribute to a healthy self image, and of course increase their overall health.

All children should participate at least in one sport over the course of their childhood or adolescence. The mental stimulation and interpersonal skill set that they gain will last them a lifetime. To keep it fun, parents should make sure that the focus of the child and the coach is on enjoyment and participation not solely winning.

Much like their senior counterparts who spend all day playing bingo, children today are spending too much time indoors playing games, rather than pursuing physical activities. With so many fun activities and sports to choose from, it’s surprising that so few of America’s youth are participating. Across the board, from basketball to tennis, ballet to tap, children’s activities have seen a dramatic drop in enrollment that cannot solely be a response to the bad economy. PlayStation game sales have not suffered, nor have their expensive game pieces and alternative systems like Wii. In fact, entertainment in the United States since the recession began has actually increased as an industry, perhaps due to the large numbers of people who need a means to escape their distressing situations.

Many sports, like karate, offer children the opportunity to socialize, thus gaining imperative social skills, and to gain agility and coordination, too. Children who are exposed to physical activity at a young age are less likely to face adult obesity, studies show, because habits instilled in youth are often kept through adolescence and adulthood. Karate, and other sports, teach children invaluable life lessons about respect, courage, confidence, and industry.

Other great sports activities for your child include things like ballet, which helps children to develop a greater sense of physical balance, as well as instilling children with a peaceful pace for exercise and relaxation. Baseball, an American classic, has lost its footing in the ranks as most popular, as other sports like soccer become more popular internationally and locally. Although bingo itself is not a great activity for children who need encouragement to become more physically active, volunteering in senior centers is a great way for kids to become more aware of others in their community who may need companionship and assistance.

There is no question that the various forms of martial arts including Kenpo, Taekwondo, Karate, Judo, Tai Chi, and Kung Fu, are excellent ways to learn how to defend yourself. Did you know that they also provide you with extensive health benefits as well? As with many other sporting activities, marital arts provide your body with an all over workout.

Physical Fitness and Mental Calm

The aerobic qualities of martial arts raises your heart rate, increasing the amount of calories you burn. If practiced frequently enough, martial arts can be a great way to lose weight. For instance in one kickboxing session, an individual could potentially burn up to 1000 calories. Along with the direct fitness aspects, martial arts are also an effective way to reduce stress.

The repetitive nature of the techniques along with the attention to breath contribute to increasing your bodies endorphin levels and reducing the stress hormone- cortisone. Other physical benefits include improved brain functioning, decrease in blood sugar and blood pressure levels, and increase in blood supply to your cells and tissues. Overall these benefits can assist your body in fighting off diabetes, increasing heart health and preventing certain types of cancers.

Flexibility and Control

Yoga, an ancient eastern spiritual and physical practice is also widely touted for its increase in a person’s flexibility. Surprisingly enough most martial arts practices also offer an excellent way to warm your body while increasing its flexibility. Various stretches actually increase the effectiveness of marital arts techniques, tight muscles don’t’ have the range nor the preciseness in movement that limber ones do.

Overall, martial arts offer its participant’s way more than just the ability to protect themselves. A frequent practitioner of any of the various martial arts forms will discover that they are a leaner, calmer, and more flexible person than before.

Most endurance athletes cannot eat the same foods that sedentary people eat, and expect to maintain a high level of performance over a long number of years. Their nutritional needs are significantly different, and need to be addressed for maximum performance. For purposes of explanation, an endurance athlete is a person who maintains elevated breathing and heartbeat rates for a significant period of time, most often two hours or more.

There are many sports whose participants are endurance athletes, even if they do not realize such. Marathoners and triathletes are obvious examples, but have you ever considered that a backpacking hiker, carrying a heavy load over many miles for extended periods of time, also qualifies? Folks who walk across a country, or row a boat across an ocean, or swim the English Channel, or engage in any prolonged activity which involves little in the way of rest, are all in the same group. Mountain bikers, trail runners, rock climbers, and even backcountry skiers, all need a special dietary intake to replace nutrients lost during prolonged sweating and exertion.

Replacing essential nutrients is the pivotal step necessary to both maintaining one’s performance level over a long period of time, and recovering as quickly as possible after prolonged exertion. This raises the question, ‘What are essential nutrients for endurance athletes?’ The answer is straightforward – the primary electrolytes, plus protein, the antioxidant vitamin E, zinc, and the B vitamins.

Most simply, the major electrolytes are calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium, and chloride. Supplements can provide the daily recommended amounts, which are challenging to derive from foods alone. Zinc and the B vitamins both help with the conversion of food into usable energy, while vitamin E has been shown to reduce cellular damage caused by strenuous exercise.

Introducing these nutrients into one’s diet via supplement form, combined with a varied diet, can aid physical performance during exercise. This process can also cut one’s ‘sore muscle’ phase after a lengthy workout or race, shortening the time required before another workout can begin. For any aspiring or practicing endurance athlete, addressing nutritional intake is a key step to improving performance.

If you suspect that martial arts need to be Kung-fu, Jujitsu or Karate, think again. Sensei’s vary in form and format and the thinking that goes with the martial arts spans every art. Case in point: acting without thought. You want to concentrate. Concentrate means to leave the mind free of thought so that the martial arts action is the only known in the moment. This is not a new concept and has been taught and written about for centuries. But this practice is not married to the martial arts alone. You will find dozens of art forms that demands clear concentration.

Rooks and knights. It is a match of intense wit. The person who knows chess well is also a person who acts on gut feeling. Know your opponent. A chess player feels as much as he sees and acts with thought. Moves and counter moves have been practiced for year and planning ahead is the name of the game. But at one point during any serious match, the time comes when sheer brilliance is not enough. Insight, gut feeling and an ability to read the master in the chair across from you becomes the truest part of the game.

It is at this point where the master of chess will act in similar fashion to the master of Kung fu. All moves memorized, that actions can take place without thought, opening the possibilities for actions that the mind alone cannot create. This is where the art of Kung fu or the art of chess become one played from a place that can never be defined.

Whether throwing a defensive maneuver with the body or doing the same across a board of black and white squares, the mind set is the same. To master each, the act must be first practiced so that it can be done without trying. A master can train the mind to let go in this manner in any venue. It need not be purely martial arts. Letting go of purposeful thought can be practiced anywhere and to be a true master, it should be.

Participation in group sports is not just for children. Adults can reap numerous benefits from participating in a variety of adult leagues. Some individuals that that seek to live an active lifestyle prefer to spend that time outside with other individuals and not tucked away in a gym. Participation in group sports gives people the option of enjoying great exercise, fresh air and the camaraderie of playing with a team.

Common Types of Adult Sports Leagues

Adult leagues often mirror the ones available to children. Common leagues include baseball, softball, basketball, volleyball, racquetball, flag football, and soccer. Most leagues will offer co-ed sports as well. Participants will usually have to sign a release that absolves the league of any liability and pay a nominal fee that usually goes towards jerseys.

Benefits for Adults

There is no question that group sporting activities are great for children, but adults that participate are sure to reap numerous physical and health benefits as well. The American College of Sports Medicine recommends that adults under the age of 65 to engage in moderately intense cardiovascular exercise 30 minutes a day, five days a week or alternatively 20 minutes of vigorously intense cardiovascular exercise three days a week.

Individuals that maintain this level of activity can look forward to increased mental health- regular exercise assists with increasing concentration, the ability to memorize and even keeps your brain healthy into old age. The physical benefits of sports activities include lowering blood pressure, increasing cardiovascular health, and weight loss. Sports are also an excellent way to relieve stress, which is associated with a host of ailments. Since group sports can be taxing it is important to consult with your doctor before you sign up for any new activities to make sure it is safe for your to participate.
